Historical Importance of the Little River
Railroad:
|
The First 2-4-4-2 Articulated
Working with the Baldwin
Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, the Little River created the first 2-4-4-2 articulated steam
locomotive, which came to be
known as the "Little River" type.

A Swinging Bridge on a Railroad
At Meigs Creek in the East Prong Gorge, there
simply wasn't a way to engineer regular track up the drainage, so a unique
approach was used. Rails were laid up the creek, log cars were loaded and eased
down a swinging bridge by a steam skidder, and across the river to Hood siding.

Pioneer of Steam Logging Equipment
The Little River pioneered modern
steam powered skidders in the rugged mountains, without which the timber could
not have been harvested.

Founding a National Park
The Little River Lumber Company
made its most enduring contribution to America's future by making available its
extensive holdings to create the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which is visited by
far more people than any other park.
